At church on Sunday nights, we do what's called Worship KidStyle for the kids while the adults participate in connection groups. I lead the craft portion of Worship KidStyle and last night our topic was obeying. We made obedience lanterns to serve as a reminder for us to obey God. So while the kids were putting together their lanterns, I was asking them if they thought it was easy or hard to obey God. Most of them said hard right away and then we discussed some times when its hard to obey and times when it can be easy.
I've been reflecting on this topic and thinking about my own obedience to God. It is very easy for me to obey God when the situation involves something I desire. It's not so easy when the situation is not something I desire. There are numerous times in our lives when obeying God just simply doesn't make sense to us, when obeying God would completely change our lives, take us out of our comfort zones, and ultimately make us feel very insecure. I was reading in Exodus last night and the story of Moses. Moses obeyed God each and every time God told him to stand before the king of Egypt and basically threaten him. He trusted God and endured what I'm sure was a very uncomfortable and quite unnerving situation. He even trusted him to walk all his people through the Red Sea and remove them from the servant life in Egypt. Amazing. It's very encouraging to read of these courageous characters in the Bible and to see how God always has a plan for us when He asks to obey him. We may not see it at first or even while we are going through these moments in life but God's ultimate plan prevails. We simply have to trust that He knows best for us. We do not know best for ourselves even though many times we think we do.
"If you love me, obey my commandments..." John 14:15
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6
